Read more about the event here: https://www.tchc.org.uk/how-you-can-help/events/inflatable-5k-race!.html Our first league season has now ended, see how we got on over the 2018/19 season... It's been a very competitive first season for our club. Having experienced tough fought games throughout the season, our Mens Plastics team finished 6th in the table of Division 5. Our team went into the season with only a small handful of players having league experience, so this was invaluable to them to get to know the format of play, and understand that there are additional levels of skill when compared to the games they've experienced at the social evenings at our club. The introduction of league badminton at the club has added a new competitive atmosphere, and provided members with something they can aim towards in terms of increasing their skills in badminton. Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club are pleased to announce 12 weeks of FREE badminton sessions! Yes that's right, you read that correctly - FREE badminton. Our club has managed to secure funding in association with Sanctuary Housing and Love Sport. Through this funding we are able to offer members* - old and new - FREE badminton sessions throughout February, March and April 2019 The FREE sessions will take place between Monday 4th February 2019 & Sunday 28th April 2019.
Simply turn up on one of the 3 sessions we run each week (Monday evening, Thursday evening or Saturday Morning.) No membership or sign up required, and no hidden fees. Details regarding our 3 club sessions can be found HERE. For more information contact badminton@shiregreensports.org.uk. Join the group on Facebook. Follow us on Instagram. Follow us on Twitter. Thanks ~SSBC Committee *Members under 15 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Well! What a year Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club has had. It's been an amazing journey at the badminton club in 2018 and the club has gone from strength to strength. We've welcomed a bunch of new members to the SSBC family this year and together have worked hard to create a fun environment to play badminton and keep fit. The SSBC committee would like to thank everyone who came down to a session throughout the year; without you the badminton club wouldn't exist. Here's a bit of a recap of our amazing 2018 here at Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club: Saturday club acquisition. One of the first achievements of 2018 was the acquisition of the Parkwood Academy Saturday morning session. The club managed to secure this session off Parkwood School and moved it to the earlier slot of 10:30am - 12:30pm. The session has grown and grown in popularity and has boosted overall turnover at the club. New website - www.shiregreensports.org.uk Did you know? - Our website had a much needed update at the beginning of the year in order to increase online presence and be a source of information for current members and potential new members. If you’re reading this then you are looking at our new website, feel free to have a browse. Also while you’re at it check out our Instagram (which was started this year) - https://instagram.com/shiregreensports New club kit It’s been a few years since our previous club kit was released, and I’m sure members would agree that it was getting ready for a refresh. Courtesy of our friends over at ClubRackets.com we now have a new range of kit items available for members to purchase. We decided to go with Victor as the brand - a well known badminton equipment/clothing manufacturer. The club still continues to subsidise £10 off one club shirt per member per year. See the range of kit choices below. Get in touch with a committee member to order yours! Inter-club tournaments As an added bit of excitement over the normal badminton sessions week in - week out, we asked members to pair up and join us for a 2v2 tournament. The competition was fierce, with members upping their games to try and be the top pair. We held a couple of tournaments towards the latter end of the year which were met with positive feedback from members. Rest assured we'll be putting more of these little tournaments on in 2019. League team We started our first League Badminton campaign in October of 2018. We entered a Men’s team into Division 5 of the plastics league. We’re hoping to bring a competitive aspect to our club moving forwards, giving members a goal to work towards outside of just social badminton. We are looking to bring on a ladies team for next season, this may be in the form of a ladies/mixed/combined team. Charity week Now slowly becoming a yearly tradition at the club our Charity Week 2018 was met with great generosity from our members. The club raised a whopping £581 in total for St Luke’s Hospice based in Sheffield. The club smashed last years total of £300 raised. Due to our efforts St Luke’s came down to a club night to do a big cheque handover and we were featured in The Star (see below for photos.) So here’s to 2019
It’s onwards and upwards for Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club. Again - a huge thank you to members for coming down to club nights throughout the year and creating an environment to have fun and play badminton. Special thank you to the limited amount of committee members who work hard to make the club a success year in, year out. Finally the committee would like to wish members a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! Once again Shiregreen Sports Badminton club will be hosting a charity week at the club raising money for St Luke’s Hospice in memory of Jane Bilton. Jane Bilton was a long-time member of our club, who passed away due to cancer towards the latter end of 2017. St Luke’s supported Jane throughout the duration of her treatment and leading up to the last day of her life. On Monday 22nd and Thursday 25th October we will charge £3 per session with all proceeds going towards St Luke’s. If you want to kindly donate more than £3 this would be welcomed. SSBC will cover the cost of courts for this evening. Monday 22nd October details: Normal Monday session at Firth Park Academy. £3+ per member going towards St Luke’s. Thursday 25th October details: We will be hosting another Inter-club tournament, get your pairs ready and your game faces on! Prepare for a tournament of the ages! A selection of buns/cakes will be available to buy on the night with proceeds going towards St Luke’s. £3+ per member going towards St Luke’s. Some more information about the charity: St Luke's care for people aged 18 and above throughout Sheffield who have terminal illnesses. They aim to control their symptoms, alleviate pain, and give them the best possible quality of life – all free of charge. https://www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/what-we-do Click here to see the donation from last year: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shiregreensports/permalink/1461938947265239/ Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club are pleased to announce that we will begin our first league badminton campaign this year. We will be entering a Mens Plastics team into the Sheffield Badminton league for the 2018/19 season. We will be starting in the bottom Division (Division 5), and are hoping to finish in a strong position in the table at the end of the season. Over the past few weeks we have hosted two tryout evenings open to members who have shown an interest in playing in the team this year. In attendance at these sessions were Adam Hague (League Team Secretary) and Will Stocks (League Team Captain), who together are responsible for selecting players to play in the team. The team was chosen based on the following criteria: An element of Correct Technique
Textbook positional play
Overall ability
Here are the 12 members who will be representing SSBC by playing in the Mens Plastics Team in our first league campaign (in no particular order): Adam Hague Will Stocks Ross George Andrew Chan Tom Powell Maz Mo George Liu Jonathan Springer Lloyd Barker Gordon Atkinson Josh Bilton Adam Hopkinson Thank you to everyone who showed an interest and came to tryout for the team. To all other members wishing to play league badminton - opportunities may arise throughout the season so keep your eyes peeled. We hope we can count on members to cheer us along at our matches!
Those of you who have been down to the club nights over the past 2 weeks, will have had a chance to play with a new nylon shuttlecock - the MAVIS 600. This shuttlecock manufactured by Yonex is the latest edition to their nylon shuttlecock range. For a number of years Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club (SSBC) has favoured the Yonex MAVIS 300 shuttlecock, which has always come out on top versus other competition. At each of our clubs AGM's we have asked if members are happy with the shuttlecocks and the decision has always - more or less - been unanimous. Today sees the club making a tough and conscious decision in our choice of nylon shuttlecock. Why is our club a nylon/plastic badminton club? The main reason is the cost implications. Nylon shuttles are more durable and cost less compared to their feather counterparts. Our club has always offered badminton sessions at a low/affordable price and that is partly due to the club using nylon shuttlecocks. What's wrong with the current MAVIS 300 shuttles? MAVIS 300 shuttles are still enjoyable to play with at our club - I'm sure members will agree. Everyone gets along with them and is used to how they feel/ play. However the durability of the shuttles has definitely deteriorated since the release of the new MAVIS 600 shuttle range. Club members will have noticed a shorter lifespan of the shuttles, with some shuttlecocks lasting 1-3 games; which is often unheard of from nylon shuttlecocks. The "feathers" of the shuttle seem to snap in numerous places and more frequently which in turn causes the shuttle to spin. The rubber/cork of the shuttle often detatches itself from the feathers, which means the cork has just completely crumbled inside the rubber. The shuttles just feel poorly made and as though less material has been used - making them increasingly light, but in turn making them more succeptable to hits from the racquets. The light feeling of the shuttle does reward members who enjoy a big smash - which is fun and great - but when the cork is exploding this is something we felt we needed to address. What are the reasons for choosing the MAVIS 600 shuttle? We've had some good feedback from members regarding this shuttle. It definitely feels different to it's predecessor - the rubber has a more harder feeling and you feel more repsonse when it hits the racquet. The shuttle feels naturally heavier so net shots require a bit more power and smashes don't come off as well as the 300. The shuttle's flight pattern seems to imitate that of a feather shuttlecock - which is good! This has been catching some members off guard though, sometimes leaving a shot that would have originally sailed out the back of the court only for it to land in. I'm sure many members would agree that the shuttle needs some getting used to. The goal for nylon shuttles has always been to imitate feather shuttles as best as possible, and we felt that by moving forwards with the MAVIS 600 it is a step in the right direction for our club.
A little note about league badminton: Sheffield Badminton were on the fence about using 300/600 shuttles for the year 17/18, they ultimately decided on using MAVIS 300 for their plastic leagues. We would anticipate that the approaching league season (18/19) will see them make the switch to the MAVIS 600 shuttles. This may be interesting for members wishing to play league badminton next season. We hope that members appreciate the thought and testing that has gone into this decision at our club. We hope that you enjoy playing with the new shuttlecocks and find success in your games. Many thanks and keep playing badminton! SSBC Committee Shiregreen Sports Badminton Club is pleased to announce their takeover of the Saturday morning badminton club session.
